Images without a camera

I love straight photography. But sometimes I like to explore alternative methods for creating imagery.

This image resulted from some experiments with a flatbed scanner. I placed an iris blossom on the scanner glass, darkened the room and made this image. The extremely short depth of field, a characteristic of the scanner designed to copy flat documents, allowed the three-dimensional object to acquire a gentle edge that I think adds mystery to the flower.
